Westlake Village's City Celebration this Weekend

Synopsis

The City of Westlake Village is counting down to its annual City Celebration event this weekend, from 3-9pm at the City's Civic Center. Below are not only a ton of activities, but many if not all of the City Council candidates will be on hand to talk with as we come up on the November 5th election.

Below are details from the City.

LVMWD Awards Top Choice for Water Tank Alternative

Synopsis

Earlier this week, LVMWD Board of Directors heard a report on the judging of the submissions for "Call for Suggestions" for alternatives to the water tank that LVMWD is expected to officially approve for construction by the end of the year. According to LVMWD's General Manager, the "intent [of the contest] was to seek creative, out of the box thinking alternatives to the 5 million gallon water tank."

The winner of the contest -- for the best alternative to the 5 million gallon LVMWD water storage tank -- is:

A 5 million gallon water storage tank.
Using a slightly different construction method (e.g., post-tensioned wire wrapped inside the tank).
Submitted by Tony Galterio, Colorado Engineering Firm

The second place was awarded to:

        Calleguas Water District Interconnection
Lower cost than the tank. Additional benefits beyond what the tank can provide.
Because the idea was submitted before, it scored low on "creativity" hence the 2nd place.
Submitted by Martin Jansen, a LVMWD customer from Agoura Hills

Criteria was set by the Board of Directors. The weighting of each judging point was determined by the five member panel. There were 10 entries submitted. Two were not judged since they were more comment than suggestions.

Because the design standard in California favors different items, such as seismic, the LVMWD General Manager believes first place submission, from Colorado, is not the best choice when compared to the existing, approved design for the 5MG tank.

"Ridgeford Parcel": What is it?

"Ridgeford Parcel": What is it?

One of the issues that will likely come before the city council in the future, is the possible uses of the 4.4 acre property that is surrounded by Oak Forest Estates, Lindero Canyon Road, and Ridgeford Drive. For those that don't know, this is the area East of the Lindero Bridge, North of Triunfo Canyon Road. This area has had issues with vandalism and mischievousness. A few years ago, there was even an injured kid riding BMX that had to be airlifted from the location. The BMX track has since been dismantled, presumably by area residents.

LVMWD customers may notice changes in water taste and odor

This afternoon, LVMWD put out information about the changes in the taste and odor of water.

Some customers at the west end of the LVMWD service area (more or less to the West of Kanan) may notice a change in the taste & odor of their tap water, which is caused by the effects of algae in Las Virgenes Reservoir. This is a temporary condition and the water remains safe to consume.

LVMWD Disbands Ad-Hoc Committee, Kills Probability Study

On Tuesday night, LVMWD's Board of Directors heard a report from the newly created ad-hoc committee (Len Polan and Lee Renger) about doing a probability study on the need for the water storage tank. The purpose of the committee was to come up with a scope to determining the probability.

Several minutes into the agenda item, Director Caspary (president of LVMWD's board of directors) decided to disband the newly created ad-hoc committee. At this point, it appears there will not be a probability study.

SpaceX launch from Vandenberg this Sunday

SpaceX will have their first launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base this Sunday, and there's a reasonable chance you'll be able to see the contrail. Look to the west and a bit north. The launch is SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket (http://www.spacex.com/falcon9).

And, according to Launch Alert (see Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/launch-alert), the launch window is currently scheduled for Sunday morning, September 15 during a 09:00-11:00 PDT. However, keep in mind that launch dates and times are always subject to change.

Council formally denies senior living project, without prejudice

Over the summer, the City of Westlake Village considered a senior living project by applicant "180", at the former Westlake hospital site. At that time, the council decided not to approve the project. As a result, council directed City staff to prepare the proper resolutions to formally deny the project. Effectively, several weeks ago was the time of the denial -- but since there was not a resolution to vote on at the time, the vote to deny was tonight. Tonight was not a discussion about whether to approve the project -- only what type of denial (with or without prejudice).

For LVUSD Students Needing Service Hours

LVUSD has recently approved Westlake Revelations to sign off on service hours for volunteer time spent on projects such as the two upcoming candidate forums (aka debates).

The service hours will be both in advance of the event to organize, promote, and prepare for the events -- as well as on site the evening of the event.

LVMWD Votes to Approve Tank Plans, Prior to Needs Analysis/Alternatives Submission

The Board of the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District last night voted to approve approve the plans, specifications and pre-qualification packages for General Contractor and Blasting Subcontractor for the 5-Million-Gallon Storage Tank Project. The next steps are for the District staff to begin the process of preparing the project for bid, and ultimately construction.

LVUSD and Other Districts' Sites Experiencing Host Problems

Users may experience issues with LVUSD web sites. The District's web site provider is experiencing an issue. A number of school districts are down as a result, or are experiencing intermittent issues. The District is aware of the issue, working with the provider, and you should try back periodically.

Outages like this happen at times. The last several weeks have seen a number of internet hosts have issues including Google, Microsoft, HostGator, .gov web sites, and many more.
