Musician and comedian David Zasloff will present Shofarpalooza! at 8 p.m. Sat., Aug. 20 in the Temple Ner Simcha sanctuary, 880 Hampshire Road, Westlake Village.

Zasloff will use the shofar to create music, comedy and stories that educate and entertain.

Guests are invited to bring their own shofar to the show.

Sometimes the right dog finds us, and other times it is a long difficult search to find the right dog.

At the Ventura County Animal Shelter in Camarillo one day in spring 1999, I was startled when a gold-and-white pup with floppy ears and nimble legs jetted around the grassy play yard full of glee, energy and mischief. She was about 5 months old and had been found as a stray.

Qualified charities. To deduct your costs, you must volunteer for a qualified charity. Churches and governments are generally qualified, and do not need to apply to the IRS. Ask the group about its status before you donate.

Raise a glass for BrewFest

The Kiwanis Club of Thousand Oaks will present its fifth annual BrewFest from 4 to 8 p.m. Thurs., Aug. 25 at Conejo Creek Park North, 1379 E. Janss Road, Thousand Oaks.

Eighteen breweries will compete for tasting honors. Eight eateries will provide food to go along with the brews.

The Kiwanis Club will also cook brats on the grill.
